After cutting down trees this past weekend (If you missed that post, click here to hear all about the yellow jacket attack that ensued)
Jon continued clearing saplings and some brush in the woods last night. Our plan is to clear a lot of the thick leaves in most of the space back there so it's safer for the kids while playing. We don't want them to stumble on snakes or other critters that can hide in the leaves and decaying stumps out there.
We're planning to put up a tire swing from this tree. Isn't it perfect?!?
As Jon was putting some more branches on a pile the previous owners had already started, Jon noticed some bricks peeking out from underneath. He pulled it up and discovered a fire pit they had made! He told me to go get Sean and tell him we'd have an impromptu bonfire :)
He was out of the house in a flash with the lighter but I told Sean he had to rake away the leaves from the pile of brush first...which didn't happen because Jon had already told him he could light it. So, we were raking away as fast as we could to get a ring around there clear to just the dirt, but the fire grew big and hot super fast.
It was starting to get really high up to the trees overhead (no pic of that I was raking!), so I told Sean to run to unwind the hose from the back of the house--thankfully it reached the edge of the woods so it was close enough to get the water on the fire. Praise God or I know it would have started a big out of control fire in the treetops that would have spread.
Jon let the rest of the leaves kind of smoulder from there and Sean was disappointed he wasn't lighting it again, but we promised him we'd build another bonfire on Saturday when we're having a couple of friends over. The promise of smores perked him up :)
So, lesson learned- rake first, light last, and always have BIG marshmallows, not only minis in the pantry.
