Short Days
Today as I was leaving work, it was cloudy, rainy, dark, and just plain dreary. I starting thinking to myself "it's only been 3 weeks since the end of daylight saving time and I'm already tired of driving back and forth to work in the dark. How am I going to make it to spring time?" Additionally, I don't remember feeling this way last winter. Is my memory really getting that short??
But, despite the frustration of only having the weekends to get things done around the house, and not being able to play outside with the kids when I get home; a smile was brought to my face when I came down our street and I saw the Christmas lights on our house. I thought about all the things that I have to be thankful for, and that if I wasn't coming home in the dark, I wouldn't be able to enjoy these special things that we only get to do once a year.

My New Thanksgiving Motto
Notice I didn't say NO fatty foods, but fewer...
Our Family ALWAYS has a great spread of food at Thanksgiving (and every other holiday and birthdays!) due to having so many wonderful cooks in the family! In fact, we all have our own customized "square plates" that Jon and I made everyone for Christmas one year (pictured above from the wonderful scrap book pages that Lynn makes for us each year!) This was Jon's idea--square plates=maximized room for food!
Back to all the cooks in the family--Jon's parents (his dad is the gourmet!), his sister Dawn, his aunt Judy, his cousin Lynn, and Jon & myself all LOVE to cook! It's wonderful come holiday time to have so many cooks because we can all share in the preparation of the meal. However, the downside is that we end up with dishes of food covering the entire table, plus a side table, and another table just for desserts!
Since they all look so delicious, we end up eating a little bit of everything, which ends up being a WHOLE LOT of something inside our tummies at the end! Well, this year, I refuse to do the whole "I feel SO stuffed" feeling! I realized it's just NOT necessary! Many of the dishes we make are typical dishes you can have any other time of the year (potatoes, corn, rolls (with butter!), rice casserole, etc, etc...) while others are special just to Thanksgiving. My favorite of these special dishes is Cornbread Dressing Lynn makes, which was Jon's grandmother's recipe. I figure, why not eat only the dishes that I really LOVE and only get once a year and skip all the other dishes that are just the extra "stuffing" that leaves me so lethargic and regretful??? That way, I get to treat myself and hopefully prevent myself from gaining 5 pounds in one day!
So for me it will be Turkey only without having Ham too (because though it's ok, I really just want the turkey on T-day!), cornbread dressing, sweet potatoes, and the green bean casserole. Without the 10 other dishes sitting on the table! I figure the most important part of Thanksgiving is the GIVING of THANKS anyway! The fellowship with wonderful family, the laughter around the table, the memories made with everyone. The food is the same every year. And if I ever lose the 15 pounds I'd like to get back to how much I weighed almost 10 years ago when Jon and I got married, then I'll splurge all the way on T-day again. But not this year. I've been working too hard to push myself backwards. And the food just isnt worth it. It's not.
As for dessert, just sticking to the pumpkin pie. Though I would love the 5 other desserts that will probably be spread out before us, again--that's not worth it either. Now, I might be very tempted come Thursday, but that's why I'm asking Jon right now--PLEASE remind me it's not worth it! Even if you want to eat a little of every dessert, that's ok! Just please don't let me! I want to keep my focus on family this year--not food!
Ok, I think I'm off my soapbox now (where I've mostly been preaching to myself--I'm not telling anyone else what to do because everyone has different goals.) Enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family and I hope many wonderful memories are made!

Things that make me smile...
Some other things that made me smile this week...
Well, I had a picture of the kids' Noah's Ark filled with Sean's train engines, however, it was deleted off the camera without being uploaded to the computer...but trust me it was hilarious when I asked Sean why they were in there he said, "Their engine sheds were dirty so they borrowed Noah's ark!
Lilly has ALWAYS loved to clean up (of which I am extremely thankful for!) However, she now loves to sing the "Clean Up" song even more, which makes me giggle every time I hear it. She only sings one line, "Clean up...our shares!" The real words are "Clean up, clean up, everybody do their share...clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere...clean up, clean up, soon the mess will not be there!"
I posted this one on FB yesterday but have to repeat it since its so good. We were outside playing when I noticed our neighbor was talking on his phone, but was out of sight so the kids couldn't see him. Sean stopped playing abruptly and asked me, "Mom, is that God talking?!?!"
Finally I smile because I have 3 healthy, beautiful children. I've been reminded this over the past couple of days since Jon & I started entering info into our family tree on ancestry.com. I have records that show SO MANY of my ancestors who lost children very, very young--before the age of two. So many that didn't even make it at all--I am thankful for modern medicine that allows our children to have the common cold and not be affected that much. Or if they do get more sick, we have treatment that makes it seem like nothing at all. Our ancestors had none of that. My 3rd great grandparents lost 5 of their 12 children before they even turned two, and I have no other info on any of the ancestors except for their birthdate, death date, and sometimes when they were married. I hope to leave more info than that behind for my great, great grandkids, which is why we are documenting our lives now!! How I would have loved to hear how my great grandmothers raised their children during such hardship! One more reason to be thankful this season!
We are travelling to New Bern tomorrow to spend an early THanksgiving with my parents and will head home Monday. Then will get to have Thanksgiving all over again with Jon's family. So thankful for everyone of them and what a blessing they are to us! Enjoy your families these next couple of months!
